Hilo baseball ends 19-game slide

John Pinasco pitched a three-hitter as Hawai'i-Hilo held off California, 2-1, yesterday at Francis Wong Stadium, snapping the Vulcans' 19-game losing streak in their final home baseball game of the season.

A.J. Satele put Hilo (2-30) up 1-0 with an RBI single in the first inning, and Sean Tamura singled in a run in the second.

The Vulcans' only other win was a 3-1 triumph over Division II Hawai'i Pacific on Feb. 12.

California dropped to 16-9.



Sea Warriors sweep

Spencer Omalza pitched a three-hitter as Hawai'i Pacific beat Alderson Broaddus (W.Va.), 11-1, in the first game of a doubleheader yesterday at Aloha Stadium.

In the second game, Greg Benoit and Alika Kuraoka each drove in three runs as HPU won, 18-9.

HPU improved to 16-8; Alderson Broaddus dropped to 1-17.



Sheridan best on O'ahu

Eugene Myers pitched a five-hitter and Derek Honma went 3 for 4, including a two-run homer in the first inning, as Sheridan routed McCully, 11-1, in the championship game of the O'ahu AJA tournament yesterday at Ala Wai Field.

Sheridan qualified for the Hawai'i State AJA Tournament, April 2 to 3 at Aloha Stadium.



SOFTBALL

UH beats San Diego

Tyleen Tausaga batted 3 for 3 with four RBIs and Paula Blanning pitched four innings of scoreless relief as Hawai'i beat San Diego, 8-3, in the Hawai'i Invitational yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hawai'i improved to 18-14; San Diego dropped to 8-12.

In an exhibition, Hawai'i beat Tokyo, 2-0.



Hawai'i-Hilo sweeps

Britni Rodriguez pitched a no-hitter and struck out 14 among the 15 outs she recorded, and Miki Asamura followed with a three-hitter as Hawai'i-Hilo easily swept Minnesota-Morris yesterday at UHH Field.

The only baserunner Rodriguez allowed in the 16-0 victory was a hit batsman in the first inning.

In the second game, the Vulcans' Nos. 1 through 4 hitters went a combined 13 for 19 with 13 runs and 18 RBIs as Hilo won, 23-0.

Hilo improved to 18-2; Minnesota-Morris dropped to 1-11.



SOCCER

Hilo team wins crown

The Hawai'i Volcanos Soccer Club of Hilo won the Under-19 boys division at the Nomads Coaches Soccer Showcase Tournament yesterday at San Diego.

The Volcanos beat the San Clemente (Calif.) Rippers 1-0 on penalty kicks in the final.



DIVING

Hawai'i's Wang third

The University of Hawai'i's Rui Wang placed third in the platform event with 466.15 points on the final day of the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at West Lafayette, Ind.

The Rainbows finished 16th at the meet with 68 points.
