Alleged car thief arrested

Advertiser Staff

Police arrested a 22-year-old man yesterday after he allegedly stole a rental car then ditched it and tried to run, police said.

A witness who saw the initial theft of the car from a car rental company spotted the 22-year-old driving it and followed the car while he called police, police said.

When the 22-year-old saw officers he jumped out of the car, ran into a home, and jumped out a window trying to escape, police said.

Patrol officers gave chase and arrested him, on suspicion of car theft and trespassing, police said.

Invalid car tag leads to arrest

Police arrested a 24-year-old man who allegedly stole a car then swapped its license plate with another vehicle, police said.

At 1:40 a.m. today a patrol officer checking the campgrounds at Barbers Point saw a two-door Honda parked in an area where camping is not allowed. The patrol officer pulled up behind the Honda and the 24-year-old started the car and began to leave.

The officer checked the license plate on the car and discovered that it belonged to a four-door Honda, not a two-door.

The officer pulled over the motorist and checked the car's vehicle identification number and discovered that the car was stolen, police said.

The man was arrested on suspicion of car theft, police said.
