How to choose a diamond that lasts forever
Gannett News Service
Planning to purchase an engagement ring? This advice comes from John Ahee, vice president of Edmund T. Ahee Jewelers, a Michigan company:
Be willing to make compromises to get what you want. You may decide on a larger stone instead of one that is perfect. Most high-quality jewelry stores will allow exchanges and, if needed, returns. But be sure to ask, especially about special orders, before purchasing. Always consult a reputable jeweler with a certified gemologist on staff. Allow your jeweler to teach you about the 4 Cs that make a diamond so special: cut, carats, color and clarity. Make sure you have a Gemological Institute of America certification to prove your diamond really is what you think it is. If you are unsure about what to buy, choose a simple solitaire setting and then return to the jeweler together to decide on the final setting. Better safe than sorry. When money is a consideration, consider using a sapphire or favorite precious stone to create a beautiful setting. Insure your diamond and ring.
Decide what size, shape and quality of diamond you want. Diamond certification matters, but liking the ring is as important.
