How to choose a diamond that lasts forever

Gannett News Service

Planning to purchase an engagement ring? This advice comes from John Ahee, vice president of Edmund T. Ahee Jewelers, a Michigan company:

Decide what size, shape and quality of diamond you want. Diamond certification matters, but liking the ring is as important.

Be willing to make compromises to get what you want. You may decide on a larger stone instead of one that is perfect.

Most high-quality jewelry stores will allow exchanges and, if needed, returns. But be sure to ask, especially about special orders, before purchasing.

Always consult a reputable jeweler with a certified gemologist on staff.

Allow your jeweler to teach you about the 4 Cs that make a diamond so special: cut, carats, color and clarity.

Make sure you have a Gemological Institute of America certification to prove your diamond really is what you think it is.

If you are unsure about what to buy, choose a simple solitaire setting and then return to the jeweler together to decide on the final setting. Better safe than sorry.

When money is a consideration, consider using a sapphire or favorite precious stone to create a beautiful setting.

Insure your diamond and ring.
