Two screen stars put focus on Islands

Never underestimate the desire of big stars to shoot in their adopted back yards.
Now, part-time Kaua'i resident Ben Stiller frequently spotted near his home in Kalihi Wai is looking at filming his next project on the Valley Isle. Kaua'i film commissioner Art Umezu confirmed that a location scout was on Kaua'i in January and submitted a report to Dreamworks last month.
Meanwhile, a location scout for the new Clint Eastwood-directed film, "Flags of our Fathers," based on the battle of Iwo Jima, is expected in Hawai'i within the next couple of weeks. Eastwood owns a home on Maui.
The production needs a stretch of beach large enough to accommodate a re-creation of the landing at Iwo Jima. The search has not been narrowed to any particular island. ...
'29 down' done early
Cast and crew of the new Discovery Kids show "29 Down" called it a wrap last Friday after a split shoot on the North Shore and a late-evening wrap party.
Despite shooting the entire season of shows outdoors, mostly at a beachside location in Mokule'ia, the production completed filming for its 13-episode initial season a few days ahead of schedule.
'Dragon' will be back
Producers of the Sci-Fi Channel movie "Komodo vs. the Dragon" were so happy with their experience filming on Kaua'i (they spent 15 days there in January) that they're coming back to shoot three more lower-budget features this summer. ...
Land a seat for 'eyes' If you haven't seen it yet and shame on you if you haven't Vilsoni Hereniko's "The Land Has Eyes," has been extended at Signature's Dole Cannery Stadium 18 through at least Thursday. Now go see it. Go. ...
New legislation
For the record: The two legislative measures relating to refundable production tax credits for film, TV and other qualified productions are not related to existing Act 221/215 investment tax credits. Supporters say the new legislation will provide simpler, more accessible, predictable and attractive incentives to film and TV producers. ...
Three cheers for Nagatas
Kudos to local actors Rachel and Julie Nagata for their impressive performances as real-life cheerleaders for Moanalua High School.
Rachel, featured in the state's "Leave 'Em Where They At" anti-smoking campaign, was part of the Moanalua squad that took first place in Medium Division of the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Cheerleading Championships.
Meanwhile, Julie's junior varsity squad, which also performed at the competition, ended its season having won the pre-season, Easterns and OIA championships. Julie was the star of James Sereno's short film "Silent Years," which won a British Academy of Film and Television Arts award last year.

Isle-phile Adam Sandler brought "Punch-Drunk Love" and "50 First Dates" to O'ahu, and might have done the same with his new remake of "The Longest Yard" if not for the generous incentives New Mexico had to offer.
