'Poker run' motors into town

Hawai'i is the second stop on polio survivor Bob Mutchler's quest to ride a motorcycle through 50 U.S. state capitals and 10 Canadian provinces by June 14 to raise awareness for Rotary International's PolioPlus program.

Mutchler, a California resident who owns a piano-tuning and restoration business, will do a 115-mile "poker run" Saturday starting at Harley-Davidson's Cycle City, 600 Pu'uloa Road, at 10 a.m. A "poker run" is a biker's game in which a playing card is handed out at the start and finish lines of the run and at three other designated stops. Prizes will be awarded for best and worst hands.

The charity ride is open to all forms of transportation. A $10 donation is welcome.

Mutchler's 18,000-mile odyssey began in Sacramento, Calif. He did rides earlier on the Big Island, Maui and Kaua'i.

Mutchler was diagnosed with polio when he was 9 months old and spent three years in an iron lung.

Car-theft suspect fails in escape bid

A 24-year-old Kalihi man was arrested Sunday night after he tried to flee from officers while driving a stolen car, police said.

At 10:31 p.m., patrol officers responded to a call of loud noise coming from the rear of Wilson Elementary School.

Officers arrived to find a 24-year-old man sitting in a car with a woman. A check of the vehicle revealed that it was stolen, police said.

As the officers told the man to get out of the car, he instead reversed out of the parking lot, hitting one of the officers' arms in the process, police said.

The man then hit a parked car on King Street and crashed into a concrete wall.

The man jumped out of the car and tried to run, but the officers caught him and arrested him on suspicion of car theft, failing to render aid and fleeing the scene of an accident.

Ho'ike head held on drug charge

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Police in an investigation with the U.S. Postal Service arrested the managing director of Kaua'i's public-access cable TV agency on a charge of commercial promotion of marijuana.

J Robertson, 53, has headed Ho'ike for four years. He was arrested March 15.

An investigator said postal authorities intercepted a 10-pound shipment of marijuana coming through the mail. They said Robertson, who lives in 'Oma'o, was not the addressee of the package, but that he was identified as a suspect during the investigation.

Two other subjects were also arrested and charged. Kaua'i police vice squad officers would not identify them. Robertson, who is free on bail, could not be reached for comment.
