SURFING

Powers second

Roy Powers of Kaua'i placed second in the Salomon Masters men's surfing contest at Margaret River, Western Australia, on Sunday.

Australia's Troy Brooks defeated Powers in the one-on-one final, 17.34-14.83. Powers led for most of the final heat, but Brooks scored a 9.67 in the closing minutes.

Powers received $7,500 for the victory and moved up to No. 4 in the 2005 World Qualifying Series ratings.

The Salomon Masters was a six-star event, which means it offers the highest level of points for surfers on the WQS. The WQS surfers with the most points at the end of the year move up to the World Championship Tour.
