Police Beat: Car theft suspect flees officers

Advertiser Staff

A 24-year-old Kalihi man was charged with car theft and attempted assault of a police officer in connection with an incident that occurred Sunday night, police said today.

The man's bail is set at $25,000.

The man was arrested Sunday night after he tried to flee from officers while driving a stolen car.

At 10:31 p.m., patrol officers responded to a call of loud noise coming from behind Wilson Elementary School.

Officers arrived to find a 24-year-old man sitting in a car with a woman. A check of the vehicle revealed that it was stolen, police said.

As the officers told the man to get out of the car, he instead put the car in reverse and backed out of the parking lot, hitting one officer's arm in the process, police said.

The man then hit a parked car on King Street and crashed into a concrete wall.

The man jumped from the car and tried to run, but the officers caught him and arrested him on suspicion of car theft, failing to render aid and fleeing the scene of an accident.

Teen arrested in car theft

Police arrested a 17-year-old Waipahu girl after she allegedly stole a car, police said.

Waipahu Crime Reduction Unit officers received an anonymous tip that several stolen cars were being kept at a Waipahu house. The CRU officers set up surveillance of the home and saw the 17-year-old get into one of the cars and drive away, police said.

Patrol officers were given a description of the vehicle and they pulled the girl over and arrested her on suspicion of car theft, police said.

Body found

A woman came home and found her 28-year-old son dead on the couch yesterday, police said.

The woman told police she got home from work and saw that her son, who was lying on the couch, was not breathing. No address was available. The City Medical Examiner's office said the body came in yesterday afternoon.

Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy.
