BUSINESS BRIEFS
Music award got lots of ink

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's music industry received hundreds of thousands of dollars in free exposure through Mainland print news coverage of the first-ever Grammy award in the Best Hawaiian Music Album category last month.

A partial assessment of several Mainland newspaper and magazine stories about the Hawaiian Music award estimated they equaled about $300,000 in advertising for Hawai'i's music industry and culture, said Honolulu public relations firm Pineapple Tweed, which promoted the Hawaiian music category for the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

The evaluation considered stories in 10 publications, including Newsweek and Billboard magazines and the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times.

Japan programs get new channel

Pacific TV USA is scheduled to launch a Hawai'i-based cable station Friday that will broadcasting programming from Japan in both Japanese and English.

Oceanic Time Warner Cable will carry the programming on channel 77, a Pacific TV spokesman said. The company plans to expand to the Mainland, Australia and South America "in the near future," the spokesman said.
