Songbook lets you strum along with Iz

By Wayne Harada

Now comes Iz, the book.

"Iz: The Songbook Collection" (Warner Bros. Publications, $19.95), just out, is a welcome resource for 'ukulele strummers and guitarists eager to play the music of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.

A compilation of 15 selections, culled from four of Bruddah Iz's best-selling Big Boy Records CDs, distributed by the Mountain Apple Co., has been quietly released — with the first shipment quickly snapped up by savvy fans. A second shipment should be in stores now.

This is sheet music collated to form a convenient songbook, or play-along book.

"The Songbook Collection" assembles Bruddah Iz's signature songs, led by the "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" medley that has penetrated mainstream films, hit TV shows and commercials. Iz's version is intact here, with lyrics and chords defined. Of course, you need to be able to read music to get maximum usage from the collection. Of course, it's from "Facing Future."

Among other selections: "White Sandy Beach" and "Hawai'i '78," also from "Facing Future"; "Kamalani" from "E Ala E"; "White Sandy Beach" and "'Opae E," from "Alone in Iz World"; and "Hi'ilawe" and "Starting All Over Again," from "N Dis Life."

A few photos of Iz are part of the volume, which features a cover depicting the iconic CDs.
