Kometani earns pitching honor

 •  Lee home to rest, not wrestle

Pepperdine senior right-hander Kea Kometani was named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week for limiting Santa Clara to three hits and an unearned run in eight innings in Saturday's 10-3 win in the Waves' conference baseball opener.

Pepperdine's Kea Kometani, a 2001 Punahou School grad, allowed three hits in eight innings to help beat Santa Clara, 10-3, and earn West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honors.

Kometani, a 2001 Punahou graduate from Honolulu, walked three and struck out four to improve to 4-2.

In his past four starts, Kometani is 3-1 with a 1.07 ERA. Over 33á innings, he has allowed 37 hits and four earned runs, while walking six and striking out 26.

More Baseball

• Chicago State freshman Aaron Moises (Saint Louis of Mililani) had two doubles and three RBIs in Sunday's 9-6 loss to Tennessee Tech.

• Cuesta College (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) freshman right-handed pitcher Ty Sarchet (Kalani '04) pitched a complete game in a 14-0 win over Moorpark March 12.

Sarchet (2-0) earned his first shutout in his third start of the season. He struck out three while allowing five hits and one walk.

• Yakima Valley Community College (Wash.) sophomore pitcher Davin Muramoto (Kalani) pitched a complete game in a 4-3 victory March 13 against Olympic Community College.Ê

Also on the Yakima team are catcher Reid Pamatigan (Kalani) and shortstop Nick Sargeant (Kalaheo).

Swimming

• UC Irvine freshman Chelsea Nagata (Maui '04 of Kahului) finished 33rd in the 100-yard butterfly (55.14 seconds) at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Friday

She finished 65th in the 50 freestyle in 23.85 seconds Thursday, and concluded the championships with a 47th-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 58.34 Saturday.

Men's Golf

• Pacific Lutheran junior Kurt Inouye (Kaua'i of Kapa'a) was named the Northwest Conference Men's Golfer of the Week Monday for earning medalist honors at the Willamette Invitational March 14.

He shot 72-75 — 147 and his score of 72 in the first round was his best this season.

• Gonzaga freshman Reyn Tanaka (Mid-Pacific '04) finished in a tie for 41st after shooting 77-84-80—241 at the Anteater Invitational March 16.

Loyola Marymount senior Chaz Inouye (St. Anthony '02 of Wailuku, Maui) shot 82-81-84—247 for a tie for 47th place.

• Idaho junior Christian Akau (Kamehameha '02 of Waipahu) shot 72-76-77—225 to tie for 45th place at the Braveheart Classic March 8.

Sophomore Gabe Wilson (Waiakea '03 of Hilo) tied for 68th (75-76-81—232) as a non-scoring individual.

• Air Force senior Kala'e Leong (Kamehameha) shot 79-69-72—220 for a tie for 40th at the University of Denver's Pioneer Classic March 16.

Women's Golf

• Pepperdine senior Rachel Kyono (Kaua'i '01 of Lawa'i) shot 82-76-71—229 to tie for 15th in the UNLV Spring Invitational March 16 and help the No. 4 Waves to a second-place finish.

• Idaho freshman Kelly Nakashima (Baldwin of Wailuku, Maui) shot 73-81-75—229 for a tie for 23rd at the Bobcat Desert Classic March 9.

• New Mexico State sophomore Lehua Wise (Kaua'i '03 of Lihu'e) had her best round of the tournament on the final day of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational March 13, firing a 5-over-par 77. She finished in a tie for 59th (85-83-77—245) at 29-over par.

• Yale freshman Lindsay Hong (Punahou '04 of Honolulu) shot an 82 in the one-round Northern Illinois University Snowbird Intercollegiate March 18, finishing in a tie for 35th.

The event was originally scheduled for 36 holes, but heavy rains in the area forced the cancellation of one round.

Softball

• California-Berkeley senior center fielder Kaleo Eldredge (Baldwin '01) went 3 for 5 with three runs, three RBIs and a home run in two games as the No. 2 Bears (23-3) cruised to a 6-0 victory against Portland State but fell to No. 23 Northwestern, 2-1, during Friday's first round at the Capital Classic at the Sacramento Softball Complex.

Games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday were rained out.

Men's Volleyball

• Sacred Heart (Fairfield, Conn.) libero Brent Monden (Hawai'i Baptist of Kane'ohe), a graduate student, is second in the nation among Division I and II schools in digs per game, with 2.78 (111 in 40 games), as of March 15.

Track and Field

• Pacific Lutheran freshman Shauna Tachibana (Kaua'i High of Lihu'e) placed 10th in the 800-meter run (2:30.27) at the University of Oregon Preview Saturday.

• Occidental (Los Angeles) junior Derek Turbin (Punahou '02 of Honolulu) recorded a 47-foot, 5fl-inch triple jump at the Whittier All-Comers meet Feb. 26.

Crew

• Pacific Lutheran freshman Sheri Sasaki (Mililani) helped her school's women's junior varsity 4+ division "A" team finish second in a scrimmage against Seattle Pacific Saturday.

Men's Soccer

• Kenji Treschuk (Moanalua '00 of Honolulu) is playing as a guest player for Heerenveen en FC Groningen (HCSC) in Den Helder, Netherlands.

HCSC is a third division team in Dutch soccer.

Treschuk played his first game Saturday, starting the match as a midfielder. The match was tied at 1 at the half, and Treschuk scored the winning goal in the 89th minute on a right-footed shot to the upper right corner of the goal.

His father, Ed Treschuk, said Kenji will play with HCSC Den Helder until May 25 before trying out for Finnish pro club FC Hammelinna. HCSC has a relationship with the prestigious soccer club AJAX, and Treschuk will be able to practice with AJAX twice a week.
