Man indicted in tax evasion

A federal grand jury yesterday indicted Kenneth Chio Heng Iong of Honolulu on felony charges of evading more than $243,000 in taxes for 1997, 1998 and 1999.

Iong was charged with underreporting his income by $739,000 over that three-year period, the U.S. attorney said. Iong reported his income during that time was $67,248, the office said.

The indictment also charged Iong with making false statements to financial institutions by using fictitious invoices to get funds for alleged purchases or leases of equipment and services, the federal prosecutors said.

The indictment also charged Dorothy Chiu Lai Yung of Honolulu with helping Iong with one of the false statements.
