Kalaheo handles short-handed Roosevelt, 55-27

KAILUA Making the move up to the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red (Division I) Conference was tough enough for Roosevelt's girls basketball team, but the injury bug has made it even tougher.
"Roosevelt is still one of the top teams in our league," said Kalaheo senior Taylor Smith, who scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked one shot last night. "They're always a good team, and when we see them again they're gonna give us a tough game."
Smith knows something about injuries, having missed most of last season after breaking her foot during a tournament in Hilo. But she's off to a good start this year, even when she's not scoring.
In last night's first period, Smith did not score but grabbed three rebounds and had two assists to help the Mustangs take a 13-7 lead.
"I wasn't hitting my shots, so I tried to contribute any other way I could," said Smith, a 5-foot-11 forward who has signed with Pepperdine University. "Last year was a learning experience; I saw the game from a different perspective sitting on the bench. Now I'm excited it's good to be back out there."
Roosevelt forward Shannon Miyashiro scored all seven of her team's points in the first quarter, but was shut out in the second period as Kalaheo stretched the lead to 23-14. The Mustangs then closed the third quarter with an 11-0 run to take a commanding 36-18 lead.
"I thought Kathleen Hicks, Shaina Siliga and Hoku Kaiu-Denning gave us a lift in the second half, and (point guard) Shantel Marumoto ran a nice floor game," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "But not having Tati and Nicky, that really hurts (Roosevelt)."
Beasley, a high-scoring junior forward, stretched tendons in her ankle after a freak accident during warm-up drills at the Punahou Spring Classic three weeks ago. She is expected back in about 10 days. Yoshimoto, a senior guard, strained a medial collateral ligament in her knee and is due back in one week. Also, Miyashiro recently recovered from a bout with the flu.
"We've been hampered," Rough Riders coach Bobby Keanini said. "But Kalaheo just kicked our butt tonight. They showed discipline and didn't chase us around on defense. They beat us in a lot of things."
Still, Keanini said Division I is where his team belongs.
"We look at it as an opportunity," Keanini said. "It's a long season, and we're still excited about it."
