UH topples Cal in water polo

Monika Kruszona scored three goals and goalie Meike De Nooy made eight saves as No. 5 Hawai'i beat No. 6 California, 10-6, yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match at UH's Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Anna Sieprath and Iefke Van Belkum added two goals each for the Rainbow Wahine, who improved to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in the MPSF.

Allison Gold scored three goals and Alex Feune de Colombi made 11 saves for the Golden Bears (11-7, 3-4).

Kruszona, a freshman from Krefeld, Germany, gave UH the lead for good with 49 seconds left in the second quarter when she whipped a shot into the lower left of the goal to make it 3-2. She scored again into the same spot as time expired in the quarter to make it 4-2.

UH hosts Pacific today and No. 3 Long Beach State tomorrow. Both matches start at 4:30 p.m.



BASEBALL

Hawai'i Pacific beats Alderson-Broaddus

Matt Burson and Josh Guerra teamed on a four-hitter as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Alderson-Broaddus, 4-1, yesterday at Aloha Stadium.

Burson went five innings, allowing three hits and no runs, and Guerra finished with two innings of one-hit ball against the visitors from Philippi, W. Va.

Danny Lee had two hits and Jherell Miller drove in two runs for the Sea Warriors (19-8).

Jerred Novotny homered for Alderson-Broaddus (1-20).



GOLF

Vulcans finish 12th in Oregon event

The Hawai'i-Hilo men's team shot a final-round 299 Tuesday to finish 12th in the 18-team Oregon Duck Invitational at the Eugene (Ore.) Country Club.

Hilo finished at 895. Washington won with 860.

Michael Putnam of Pepperdine and James Lepp of Washington shared medalist honors with 208 totals.

Troy Higashiyama led the Vulcans with 220 to tie for 25th.
