Airline, workers earn war honors

Hawaiian Airlines and 60 Hawaiian employees, including cockpit crew members, flight attendants, mechanics, loadmasters and catering coordinators, have received certificates of appreciation from the Department of Defense for their part in 22 Operation Iraqi Freedom missions.

In spring 2003, Hawaiian planes and volunteer crews flew 4,000 soldiers to Middle East combat zones and military bases in Asia as part of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet.

Hawaiian flew six missions to U.S. military outposts in Operation Iraqi Freedom's Area of Responsibility in the Mideast. Soldiers were picked up at bases in California, Colorado and Texas.

In preparation for entering the Mideast, Hawaiian's flight crews were required to land at U.S. bases in Germany or Italy to undergo special theater orientation training before reaching their final destination.

Hawaiian's other 16 missions transported soldiers from Alaska to bases in Japan, Korea, Singapore and Vietnam.
