ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Kauai music Festival: Vanessa Carlton beyond ivories

Advertiser Staff

Vanessa Carlton will perform and share tips on the music biz in May.

Sheryl Nields

Would we walk a thousand miles to see Vanessa Carlton? Perhaps. She's a talented singer/songwriter, gifted pianist and, well, kind of hot. We might even fly to Kaua'i between May 25 and 29 to be teacher's pet at one of her master classes at the annual Kauai Music Festival.

In addition to teaching a couple of seminars on breaking into and maintaining a career in the music business, Carlton will perform at fest-related shows at Kauai Community College on May 28 and 29. Also scheduled to perform are Jake Shimabukuro, John Cruz and Grammy-winning slack-key guitarist Charles Michael Brotman. Tickets and more information at www.kauaimusicfestival.com.

'Amazing Race' casting call: Family alert at Ala Moana Center

If you can't pull yourself away from the tube on Tuesdays for fear of losing track of Rob and Amber and the rest of the couples in the "Amazing Race," then head to the Ala Moana Center Stage today from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The show is holding a casting call and this time it's looking for families of four.

All types of families can apply — traditional, nontraditional, families in the making, in-laws, adoptees ... anything goes. Kids must be 12 or older.

You can download an application at KGMB.com or get one at any Burger King location.

Copies will be available at the casting call.

Comedian Tim Allen ¨• in the New York Post:
FINAL WORD

"If you live in Hollywood, it's hard to know your neighbor. Even hard for children. You have to organ-ize play dates with security people."
