HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Escape suspect faces new charges

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police have charged a 23-year-old man with 11 separate offenses stemming from a shooting last month in Waimea.

Kalani Kaohimaunu was charged with first-degree attempted murder, three counts of second-degree attempted murder, three counts of terroristic threatening, three counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony and one count of felony possession of a firearm, police said.

Kaohimaunu also faces an escape charge for allegedly fleeing from corrections officers on Oct. 27 as he was being transported to South Kohala District Court on arrest warrants for contempt of court and failure to appear.

The attempted murder and other charges stem from a Feb. 5 incident at a Waimea home. Police said Kaohimaunu allegedly brandished what appeared to be a .22-caliber rifle and confronted three men looking for his brother. As the three victims fled the area in their vehicle, Kaohimaunu fired four to eight rounds at them, with rounds striking the rear bumper and right rear passenger door, police said.

Kaohimaunu was arrested Sunday near Pohoiki in Puna. He was being held yesterday in Kona police cellblock in lieu of a total bail of $288,000.
