HAWAIIAN STYLE
By Wade Kilohana Shirkey
Advertiser Staff Writer
Come with me as the Mind Wanders hither and yon:
The Big Island Macintosh computer user club is The Mac Nuts. Too cute, eh?! Likewise, on the Net, there's the Serious Macintosh Users' Group (SMUG, to their friends). Then there's the Southern California SoCal Mac Owners/users Group (SMOG). Then you have the Apple Pickers and Apple Ciders. I'll drink to that. The Kinki Macintosh Users Group in Japan, I refuse to speculate on.
The Isle-style bar on Lewers Street in Waikiki: Bambooze. I'll drink to that too.
Ahhhh, Hawai'i's colorful nicknames. In the newspaper the same day a while back: a Kittyboy and a Froggie; a Lefty and a Skippy.
Equally neat name: Rainbow Moku (wow, Rainbow Island, too good!) And, a Muriel Junny Ho. How about Darling Cabanatan. Darling! Too good.
Sisters, all and daughters of Bernardo Biscocho: Bernardine, Bernadette, Bernice, Bernette and Bernalina. Their brother is Bernard.
Lindy Waiamau Jr.'s brother? Lindsay Waiamau. Then there are the two brothers, James and James. That's one James Waiamau and one James Shaver. Lindy and Lindsay, and James and James.
A name cuter than a bunny rabbit: Bunny Look, who's with the Halekulani public relations department.
Downtrodden in the storm of life? At the New Life Body of Christ Christian Church, in Wahiawa, one name strikes a chord: Bishop Hurricane Henderson.
Names, so sweet: Tangerine Young. Then, in Kihei, is Angelic Furtado. And a
Hyacinth Cafe, in Kohala. And, there's a Chrysanthemum Pe'a Kalili who has a brother, Walter Nihipali, nicknamed Tootsie. And a Vanda J. Domingo in Honoka'a, whose sister is Lovey Juan don't you just love it?! (But how do you pronounced brother Cewardlee's name?)
Don't-ja-love-it? Thomas Edison Record, the late Big Island resident with the interesting name pairing.
I love geographic given names: How 'bout Kahala Kanahele? Is Maui Ogata a Maui boy?
Or Na'alehu Anthony, son of the late UH language professor Pua Hopkins. And pure poetry: Pua's sister Lilinoe Miggs a fluidly beautiful first name and neat nickname.
And, if you're from Kanakanak, Alaska, are you a kanakanak?
Another great name: Narcissus Yap.
And one delicious name: Amy and Matthew Bento, of Honolulu.
Cute business names, too: Touch n Go Massage in the 'Ilikai Hotel.
Crafty crafts hobbyist Lono Goo is proud of his Ph.D. that's Part-Hawaiian Designs, a T-shirt side business.
And, the late Walter Grilho, 67, of Pearl City, had a son, Walter (Torres). And another son, Walter (Grilho).
Hawai'i's Jonathan Nature his mom, what, Mother Nature?
Was the late Khon Wong, former manager of Wong's Produce Inc., a big Channel 2 fan?
Totally cool name that's reminiscent of the Hawai'i protest song "Kaulana Na Pua" ("Famous Are the Flowers [Children])": Kaulananapua Pestana.
In the Yoshimoto family, there was the late Wallace Yoshimoto, plus his son Wallace Yoshimoto and another son, Wyllace Yoshimoto. That's Wallace, Wallace and Wyllace.
In Illinois, says a reader who's an ex-Chicago resident, there are the towns of Oblong and Normal. The Bloomington Pantagraph is best remembered thereabouts, he says, for the headline over a marriage announcement: "Oblong Man Marries Normal Woman."
And, only in California:
Cocoa Pete's (Slosberg) chocolate company boasts of one particular offering, Caramel Knowledge.
The Advertiser's Wade Kilohana Shirkey is kumu for Na Hoaloha O Ka Roselani No'eau. He writes on Island life.
