Kaua'i surfers Koa Smith, Kyle Ramey and Alana Blanchard were among the standouts in the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) Hawai'i Region Championships this week.

The event, which was completed on Wednesday, was held over three days at Pine Trees Beach, Kaua'i. Waves ranged from 2 to 8 feet during the week.

Smith, Ramey and Blanchard took advantage of their home surf to win two titles each.

Smith won the open mini-grom and open boys divisions. Ramey won the open men and explorer men divisions. Blanchard won the explorer girls and explorer women divisions.

More than 200 of the state's top scholastic surfers competed in the event. The top performers will represent Hawai'i at the NSSA National Championships, which will be held June 16 to 25 at Lower Trestles, Calif.

O'ahu surfers Derek Wong and Taylor Bushman each won a $2,500 scholarship for their academic work this year.
