Springtime means good old-fashioned baseball, garlic fries and cherished memories for the Stevens family.
For the first time this season, Randy Stevens and his Waikele family watched the University of Hawai'i baseball team at Les Murakami Stadium.
"The kids love it," said Stevens, who coaches his sons, Christian, 13, and Jordan, 10, on Waipi'o Little League baseball teams.
With busy schedules, getting the gang together was no easy task for the Stevens family. But the memories were worth it, the father said.
"It's really nice to spend some time together as a whole family," said Stevens, who runs a general contracting firm and whose wife, Alicia, volunteers at church, and also cares for their daughter, Aysia, 8. "We're pretty much all week bouncing all over the place."
The Saturday night game was especially memorable for Jordan, who watched his favorite UH baseball player, second baseman Isaac Omura, compete against visiting Louisiana Tech in the conference-opening series.
"I like him because he can hit very well," said Jordan, who is a fifth-grader at Waikele Elementary.
The Stevens sat behind home plate and soaked in the ballpark atmosphere. They were happy to see some of their friends there, too.
"I was kind of excited," added Christian, who is an eighth-grader at Waipahu Intermediate. "We were walking around with our friends and buying a lot of food."
Randy Stevens, who has coached baseball for six seasons and is on the board of directors for Waipi'o Little League, said going to the ballpark "is all part of the adventure for us."
"It's baseball season for the kids," Stevens said. "It's always good to catch a few games so the kids can get some tips and be motivated by the players."
The father said he hoped his sons would remember the ballpark experience and return the favor to their children.
"I'd like to see that," the father said. "But I also hope they would come get me and take me, too."
Randy Stevens of Waikele shepherded the kids into their seats behind home plate for a UH baseball game on a recent Saturday evening.
With their busy schedules, it was hard for Randy Stevens, here with daughter Aysia, 8, to get the family together for a UH baseball game.
