Even cold, blustery conditions could not shake Punahou ace Jared Pate yesterday at Aloha Stadium.
Photos by Andrew Shimabuku The Honolulu Advertiser Pate pitched a no-hitter in an 11-0 victory over Kamehameha on March 19.
"I thought he actually threw better today than he did last week," Buffanblu coach Eric Kadooka said. "He was getting his curve over early in the count, and then he'd hit the corners in key at-bats. His command on the mound was there."
Pate struck out six and walked two. In last week's no-hitter, he struck out two, walked one, hit three batters and had a wild pitch.
"I had more control over my pitches today," Pate said. "Last week, I was only getting about 20 percent of my curves over for strikes. This time it was more like 85-90 percent."
Like last week, Pate also got an early lead to work with. Landon Nakata, Punahou's second batter, hit an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the first inning. The drive to straightaway center field ended up rolling all the way to the 420-foot sign, allowing Nakata to circle the bases and slide home safely.
"Even one run can be a big confidence-booster early on," Pate said. "It's much easier to pitch with a lead."
The Buffanblu made it 2-0 in the fourth after Steven Dannaway was hit by a pitch leading off, went to second on Paul Snieder's sacrifice bunt and scored on Maika Murashige's single. Kasey Ko's triple to center scored pinch-runner Lane Suzuki in the fifth to make it 3-0.
The Owls threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. But Pate got a 1-2 fastball over the outside corner to preserve the shutout.
Pate also got solid defensive support, including shortstop Nakata's diving catch of a Nathan Rice line drive to lead off the seventh. In Pate's two victories, the Buffanblu have made only two errors in 12 innings.
"Warming up, I thought (the weather) would affect me more," Pate said. "Mid-Pac is a good hitting team, and they put the ball in play. But my defense always comes through when I'm pitching, which I appreciate a lot. It really helps my confidence."
