Sun fourth in 200 back at NCAA swimming

Stanford sophomore Hongzhe Sun, a 2003 Iolani School graduate, placed fourth in the 200-yard backstroke yesterday at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota.

HONGZHE SUN

Sun finished in 1 minute, 41.62 seconds, helping the Cardinal to a second-place finish with 414 points. Auburn won the title with 491 points.

Ryan Lochte, a junior from Florida, won the 200-yard backstroke in an NCAA record time of 1:38.37.

University of Hawai'i junior Thomas Winkler placed 26th in 1:46.26.

Also, Cal-Berkeley senior Caleb Rowe, a 2001 Baldwin High graduate, placed 10th in the 200-yard breaststroke in 1:55.78. UH's Chad Thomsen didn't make the finals after being disqualified.

Sun tied teammate Jayme Cramer for fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 46.55 seconds on Friday. Sun's preliminary time of 46.44 was a personal best and ranks sixth all-time at Stanford.



TRACK AND FIELD

Murray 3rd in discus

University of Hawai'i junior Novelle Murray threw the discus a personal-best 51.98 meters to finish third yesterday at the 31st Stanford Invitational at Stanford, Calif.

Murray's throw was the second-farthest in UH history and the best in the Western Athletic Conference this season.

Kelly Young finished fourth in the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 7.95 seconds — the second-fastest time in school history and the best in the WAC this season.

Also, Meghan Weaver placed sixth in the shot put (13.93 meters), Tasha Monroe took 11th in the 200 (25.17) and Dana Buchanan finished 20th in the 1,500 (4:31.24).



SURFING

Abubo takes third

Megan Abubo of Waialua placed third in the SPC Fruit Pro surfing contest Friday, and remained the No. 1-ranked surfer on the women's 2005 World Championship Tour.

The final day of the contest was completed in 1- to 3-foot waves at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia.

Abubo was eliminated in the semifinals by Peru's Sofia Mulanovich, 15.67-14.93. Mulanovich went on to defeat Australia's Serena Brooke in the final.

Abubo received $4,000, and has 1,728 points through the first two contests of the 2005 world tour. Mulanovich, the defending world champion, is No. 2 with 1,560 points.

Kaua'i's Keala Kennelly was eliminated in the quarterfinals.



SOFTBALL

UH beats St. Mary's

Kate Robinson pitched a six-hitter and Kaulana Gould hit a pair of two-run singles as Hawai'i defeated St. Mary's, 8-0, yesterday at the Stanford Classic in Stanford, Calif.

Noelle Izumi batted 3 for 4 and scored twice for the Rainbow Wahine (20-17), who return to host Fresno State this weekend.

St. Mary's fell to 5-24.

Twinbills canceled

Chaminade's doubleheader at Hawai'i-Hilo and Montana State-Billings' twinbill at Hawai'i Pacific yesterday were canceled because of rain and will not be rescheduled.
