UH to hire former NFL coach Glanville

The University of Hawai'i football team is expected to hire former National Football League head coach Jerry Glanville as the Warriors' defensive coordinator, according to a UH official familiar with the situation.

UH coach June Jones did not return messages left on his office and cellular telephones yesterday and this morning. ESPN.com reported Glanville's hiring this morning on its Web site.

But two people familiar with the situation said Jones introduced Glanville to the coaching staff this morning, and that Glanville was assigned the office previously occupied by Mike Cavanaugh. Earlier this month, Cavanaugh resigned as UH's offensive line coach to accept a similar job at Oregon State.

The past two seasons UH divided the defensive coordinator duties between George Lumpkin (run defense) and Rich Miano (pass defense).

Cavanaugh's departure created an opening on the staff. It is believed Glanville will only work during the season. In 1999 and 2000, UH special teams coach Dennis McKnight lived in San Diego during the offseason.

Jones has worked two stints under Glanville — as the Houston Oilers' quarterback coach in 1987 and '88 and as the Atlanta Falcons' assistant head coach from 1991 to 1993.
