STOP ALIEN INVASION The O'ahu Invasive Species Committee will conduct a survey of fireweed, an invasive plant, on the Waimano trail above Pearl City, 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. April 9. Volunteers should come prepared for a moderate 1-mile hike to the work site; bring long pants, hat, at least 3 liters of water, hiking shoes and lunch. Meet at Church of the Crossroads. RSVP to oisc@hawaii.edu or 286-4616. POUHALA MARSH RESTORATION The Hawai'i Nature Center is cleaning up and restoring the wetland habitat in Pearl Harbor. Volunteers are needed to pull pickleweed 8:30-11:30 a.m. April 9. Bring work gloves, water, hat, sunscreen, towel and change of clothes; covered footwear and long pants required. KANE'OHE BAY WETLAND PROJECT Volunteers are needed April 9 to help the Sierra Club clear a wetland of mangrove to create habitat for endangered water birds at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i, Kane'ohe Bay. Because the base is a secured military facility, volunteers must provide name and Social Security number in advance and bring a signed waiver. Call Annette Kaohelauli'i at 235-5431. MARINE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Wild Dolphin Foundation is looking for volunteers, particularly those willing to serve as cultural advisers and volunteer coordinators. Volunteer activities include shipboard docent work for "Dive into Dolphins Tuesdays"; video and still photography of whales, dolphins and turtles; shore observations; and development of broadcast material, public service announcements, documentaries and other material. KONA PLANT SALE The Kona Outdoor Circle will hold its annual Pua Plantasia Plant Show and Sale, 8 a.m.-2 p.m Saturday at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort. Twenty vendors will offer plants; the Department of Agriculture will have an exhibit on invasive species; and master gardeners will provide advice. GREENING YOUR YARD A free workshop on using compost in your garden will be held from 8:30-10:30 a.m. April 24 at Hawaiian Earth Products' Leeward site at 91-400 Malakole Road. BONSAI EXHIBIT & SALE The Pearl City Bonsai Club will hold a free exhibit and plant sale 9 a.m.-2 p.m. April 30 at the 'Aiea Elementary School cafeteria. Bonsai plants, nursery stock and bonsai-related items will be on sale. Call Keith Schultz at 262-5873.
WEST HAWAI'I SCHOLARSHIP The Kona Outdoor Circle is offering a $1,000 college scholarship to students studying horticulture, landscaping, environmental studies, forestry, agriculture or related fields. Applicants must be full-time students and residents of West Hawai'i. April 30 is the deadline to apply.
