St. Patrick School to honor alumni

Alumni to be honored at St. Patrick School's Annual Gala Banquet are Brother Patrick Hughes, the Rev. Thomas Choo, Russell Valente, Michael Chu and Lebert O'Sullivan.

The April 22 banquet will benefit the Capital Campaign, which is raising money to build a preschool, a computer laboratory and a library.



Nature trustee chairman named

The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii has announced that David Cole, chairman, president and CEO of Maui Land & Pineapple Company Inc., has been elected new chairman of its board of trustees.

Cole is part of a leadership team that includes vice chairmen Duncan MacNaughton, president of the MacNaughton Group, and retired Duty Free Shoppers executive Kenton Eldridge. This team will be joined by TNC trustees Jamie Shennan, a venture capitalist; and Ron Higgins, a veteran of Hawai'i's technology industry.

Cole succeeds Jeff Watanabe, of the law firm Watanabe, Ing, Kawashima & Komeiji.



Distinguished UH grads lauded

This year's recipients of the University of Hawai'i Distinguished Alumni Awards are: Charles Araki, professor emeritus with UH-Manoa's College of Education; Elmer Botsai, architecture expert in building diagnostics; Frederick Duennebier, professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at UH-Manoa; Robert Hiam, president and CEO of Hawai'i Medical Service Association; Carole Kai, professional entertainer; Dr. Jong-wook Lee, director-general of the World Health Organization; and Dr. Gary Okamoto, president and CEO of The Queen's Health Systems.

The UH Founders Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Ronald Bright, artistic director of Castle High School's Performing Arts Center.



Keoki's Paradise picks top worker

Keoki's Paradise has named Fernando Ramos as its 2004 Employee of the Year. Ramos, a cafe cook at the Kaua'i restaurant, was recognized for this steadfast commitment and contributions.



Year's top social workers chosen

The 2005 Social Workers of the Year are: Mildred Sikkema, Overall Social Worker of the Year; Johnny Papa, family and child welfare awardee; Eunice Trim, medical and gerontology; Kalei Kanuha, professional education; Joel Fischer, social justice.

Friend of Social Work awardees are: Kat Brady, Community Alliance on Prisons and Carla Sharp, Hawaii Association for Play Therapy.

The National Association of Social Workers Hawaii Chapter presented the awards.
