BUSINESS BRIEFS
Code-sharing under discussion

Advertiser Staff

Maui-based Pacific Wings and potential competitor FlyHawaii Airlines are discussing possible code-sharing arrangements that would allow customers to book connecting flights on both airlines through a single reservation.

FlyHawaii hopes to begin service early next year from Honolulu to Kahului, Maui, and could transfer passengers to Pacific Wings flights bound to places such as West Maui or Hana, said FlyHawaii CEO James Delano.

Delano and Pacific Wings President Greg Kahlstorf said they discussed the possibility of such an arrangement last week, but no decision has been made.

"I would certainly be interested, but it's way premature" Delano said.

Carlyle, Verizon get more time

The state Public Utilities Commission yesterday granted The Carlyle Group and Verizon Hawaii more time to decide whether to appeal conditions placed on a $1.65 billion deal for Hawai'i's main telephone company.

The two companies now have until April 4 to ask the agency to clarify or reconsider its decision, which approved the deal only if Carlyle kicks in more cash to buy Verizon Hawaii, restricts dividends to debt repayment and doesn't sell Verizon's print directory business.

Ex-Navy leader joins ferry board

Former Navy Secretary John Lehman has been appointed to Hawaii Superferry's board of directors.

Lehman's firm J.F. Lehman & Co. is the primary equity investor in the Superferry, which hopes to begin interisland operations in Hawai'i in early 2007. Lehman will serve on the board but not participate in operations of the company, a spokesman said.

Although the company plans to concentrate on moving private passengers and vehicles between the islands, it also hopes to secure a contract to move military personnel and supplies between O'ahu and the Big Island, a move that could be strengthened by Lehman's military background, officials said.
