Wrestlers from Hawai'i win at nationals

 •  Nebraska's Ito driven to succeed in golf, life

Two female wrestlers from Hawai'i captured national championships at the second annual Women's National College Wrestling Championship Saturday at Menlo College in Atherton, Calif.

Pacific (Ore.) sophomore Kapua Torres won the 112.25-pound class and Missouri Valley College sophomore Selina Perez won the 176-pound division.

Torres, a 2003 graduate of Kahuku and the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 112.25 pounds, went 3-0 through the bracket, scoring pins in her first two rounds over Lassen's Ashley Nethercott and Sabrina Lancelletti. In the championship, Torres beat Missouri Valley College's Mika Watanabe, 6-0, 7-1.

Torres finished second in last year's national championship, falling to Missouri Valley's Debbi Sakai, a 2003 Mililani graduate. Torres is the Boxers' 11th national champion in wrestling, and the fifth in women's wrestling.

Perez, a 2003 graduate of Baldwin, pinned Pacific freshman Ashley Truchon, a graduate of Hilo, in 42 seconds for the championship.

Perez lost in the second round to Rachel Knight of Lassen, 5-0, 1-3, 6-0, and Truchon pinned Knight in 1:39 in the first round.

Missouri Valley College's Sadie Kaneda (Roosevelt, 105.5 pounds) and Pacific's Jazmine Cockett (Kamehameha, 130 pounds) both finished fourth in their respective divisions.

Baseball

• Chicago State sophomore second baseman Jonathan Sakurai ('Aiea '03) was named the Mid-Continent Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

Sakurai was 12 for 18 from the plate (.667), in a four-game series against Illinois-Chicago last weekend. He scored four runs and was 8 for 8 in stolen bases.

Sakurai is hitting .359 with 28 hits in 78 at-bats and leads the team in runs scored with 16. He also is 23 for 24 in stolen bases, which leads the conference. In addition, he has hit three doubles, driven in six runs and has a .490 on-base percentage, which is second in the league.

• Brigham Young junior designated hitter Apana Nakayama (Moloka'i of Kaunakakai) batted 4 for 8 with an RBI, three runs and a double and a triple in a doubleheader sweep over Utah, 7-2 and 5-3 on Saturday night.

• San Francisco closer Patrick McGuigan (Mid-Pacific '02) picked up two saves over the weekend in a series against Santa Clara.

McGuigan, a junior right-hander, came on with one runner aboard and no outs in the ninth in a 6-4 win over Santa Clara on Friday. He did not allow a hit and struck out one to notch his fourth save of the season.

Thursday, he came on in the eighth, tossing 1¡ innings, allowing no hits to go along with two strikeouts in a 1-0 win.

• Hartnell (Salinas, Calif.) Community College's Marc Nobriga (Saint Louis '04) scored the winning run in the 11th inning of a 4-3 win over Gavilan on March 15.

Sophomore Chris Balatico (Mililani '03) pitched into the sixth inning for the Panthers, striking out nine to give him 25 strikeouts in his last two games. He allowed three hits and one earned run.

Freshman third baseman Jake Oketani (Kaua'i) and Casey Oketani (Kaua'i) had two hits each.

Nobriga pitched a one-hitter to lead Hartnell to a 9-1 win against San Francisco City College on March 17.

The lone run he gave up was unearned and came in the fifth inning when Hartnell already had a 3-0 lead.

Hartnell freshman catcher Jowen Murray-Thornton (Saint Louis '04) finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs, and Casey Oketaki (Kaua'i) had two hits.



Men's Volleyball

• University of the Pacific (Calif.) senior opposite hitter Brian Zodrow (Saint Louis '01) had a team-high 10 kills in a 3-0 loss to Pepperdine on March 19.

He was the only Tiger to reach double figures in kills.

• Hunter College (New York) freshman setter Brandon Caban (Mililani '04) was named to the City University of New York (CUNY) second team.

Caban was named to the CUNYAC Men's Volleyball Championship all-tournament team after leading Hunter to its third consecutive title, a 3-2 win over Baruch Thursday. He had 70 assists and 16 digs in the championship match.

• Idaho freshman Kelly Nakashima (Baldwin of Wailuku, Maui) shot 72-73-75—220 to tie for 15th at the Mountain View Collegiate that ended Sunday.

• Loyola Marymount senior Chaz Inouye (St. Anthony '02 of Wailuku, Maui) shot 71-74-82—227 to tie for 37th at the Fidelity National Title Intercollegiate hosted by Cal Poly on Friday.

• Pacific Lutheran (Tacoma, Wash.) junior Kurt Inouye (Kaua'i of Kapa'a) tied for third with a one-round score of 78 at the Pacific University Tournament on Monday.

Men's Tennis

I Boise State senior Ikaika Jobe (Punahou '01 of Wailupe) won one of the two Broncos' singles matches against Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the championship match of the Boise State Red Lion Men's Tennis Spring Break Tournament Saturday.

Jobe defeated Goncalo Figueiredo, 6-3, 6-4.

He teamed with Matias Silva in a loss to Figueiredo and Javier Bacaioca at No. 2 doubles, 8-1.

• UCLA senior Chris Lam (homeschooled from Kaimuki) defeated Arizona State's Ryan McBride, 6-2, 6-7 (4), (10-6), at No. 4 singles in a Pac-10 match Saturday.

He teamed with Luben Pampoulov to defeat Mike Beatty and Clint Letcher, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles.

• Loyola Marymount senior Mike Wojnarowicz (Saint Louis of Kane'ohe) won his No. 1 doubles match, teaming with Matt Phillips to beat Dave Webb and Andres Reyes of Dartmouth, 8-6 on Thursday.

He lost his No. 1 singles match to Webb, 7-6 (0), 5-7, 7-6 (1).
