Forgery leads to arrest

A 34-year-old man who allegedly tried to cash a check that had a wrong date on it was arrested yesterday for suspicion of forgery.

Police said the man walked into a Honolulu bank about noon and tried to cash a $500 check that had a July 2005 date on it.

A suspicious teller then called the owner of the account the check was drawn on, and the owner said she had not issued the check.

The man who tried to cash the check was arrested for suspicion of second-degree forgery.

While being processed at the main police station on Beretania Street, police reportedly found drugs and drug paraphernalia on the man, leading to additional charges.

Boy uses fake gun to rob

A 15-year-old boy was arrested in Nanakuli early yesterday morning after he allegedly tried to rob two men with a toy hand gun.

Two men, ages 21 and 24, told police they were walking mauka on Nanakuli Avenue and were about 10 feet apart when the boy approached the first man, pulled out the gun and demanded cash and the man's handbag.

The man told police he realized the gun was a toy and told the boy to "get lost."

The second man, however, told police he did not realize the gun was not real and that he turned his handbag over to the boy. The two men said the boy then ran toward Nanakuli Beach Park

Police found the boy hiding behind the old Nanaikapono Elementary School and the two men identified him. Police then arrested the boy on suspicion of first-degree robbery. The boy was later released without charges pending further investigation.

Dead cyclist identified

The city Department of the Medical Examiner has identified Bobby Edwards as the man who was killed yesterday when he lost control of his motorcycle and struck a utility pole near Waialua.

Police said Edwards was traveling north Kaukonahua Road when the motorcycle veered off the road at about 4:35 p.m. and struck a pole about a mile south of Farrington Highway. Edwards was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 6 p.m.

Police said Edwards was wearing a helmet and that speed appeared to be a factor in the crash.

Yesterday's fatality was the 19th so far this year, compared with 18 during the same period last year.

Police closed Kaukonahua Road for more than four hours while they conducted their investigation.
