Advertiser wins 22 publishing awards

The Honolulu Advertiser won 22 awards yesterday, including 11 first-place awards, in the Hawai'i Publishers Association's Pa'i Awards contest for work published in 2004.
Writers Curtis Lum, Vicki Viotti and Will Hoover took first place in the spot news category for a story on a February 2004 wreck on the H-1 Freeway that claimed four lives and reignited debate on how to control speeding and racing on O'ahu.
First place in the editorial series category went to "The Graying of Hawai'i," which addressed caring for the state's older residents. Writers were Tanya Bricking Leach, Mary Kaye Ritz, Zenaida Serrano, Robbie Dingeman, Dan Nakaso, Deborah Adamson and Catherine Toth.
The Advertiser swept this category.
First place in the investigative reporting category went to Christie Wilson for "Parents alerted to camp closure."
Mike Gordon's "About Men" column won first place in the editorial column category.
Ann Miller's stories on Olympic silver medalist Bryan Clay took first place in sports reporting.
The first-place award in the business and industry category went to Sean Hao for his "Ethanol tax breaks a bonanza for some."
Top honors in breaking business news went to Nakaso and Lum for coverage of the Ameron Concrete strike.
First place for feature photography in newsprint went to Rebecca Breyer for a photo of a playful girl pulling the suspenders of a boy playing a piano.
The Advertiser also swept this category.
Bruce Asato's photos for "The Graying of Hawai'i" series won first place in the essay photography-newsprint category.
"The Other Hawai'i" series that chronicled a voyage of the Hokule'a voyaging canoe captured first place in the newsprint excellence in design category.
A graphic on The Advertiser's new printing press won first place in the informational graphic category.
