World champ Irons places second in Australian surf

Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i's Andy Irons placed second in the Rip Curl Pro yesterday in 1- to 3-foot waves at Phillip Island, Australia.

Australian Trent Munro defeated Irons, 16.57-15.07, in the one-on-one final. The score was tied midway through the heat, but Munro clinched the win with an 8.0 ride with seven minutes remaining.

Irons, the three-time defending world champion, was the only Hawai'i surfer to advance to the final day of the competition.

Irons won three heats yesterday before falling in the final. In his semifinal victory over Florida's Cory Lopez, Irons had near-perfect scores of 9.63 and 9.33.

Irons received $16,000 and moved up to No. 3 in the 2005 World Championship Tour ratings.

Munro is No. 1 with 2,076 points, followed by Mick Fanning with 1,800, and Irons with 1,764.

The next contest on the world tour is the Billabong Pro Teahupoo at Tahiti, May 5 to 17.

SOFTBALL

UHH beats No. 12 team

Britni Rodriguez pitched a two-hitter as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated 12th-ranked San Francisco State, 3-0, yesterday to salvage a split of a doubleheader at San Francisco.

San Francisco State (21-9) used a bunt single to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning and capture the second game, 4-3.

Rodriguez faced just 24 batters to record her sixth complete game of the season. She walked two and struck out six.

The Vulcans (21-3) scored all three runs in the fifth — one on an error and two on Haunani Haasenritter's single.

HPU takes two

Dayna Berry and Clerisse Lemke each pitched a five-hitter as Hawai'i Pacific swept a doubleheader from Cal State Stanislaus yesterday at Turlock, Calif.

Berry walked four, struck out five and allowed an unearned run as HPU won the opener, 2-1, in eight innings.

Nicole Kalakau's RBI double with one out in the top of the eighth put the Sea Warriors ahead to stay.

Lemke walked one, struck out six and hit a solo homer as the Sea Warriors won the second game, 8-2.
