Punahou Relays provides quantity, quality

By Jonathan Lyau
Special to The Advertiser

Who said the Punahou Relays was losing its luster? With some 800 athletes from 30 high schools, yesterday's meet had the most participants it had seen in years. The 60th running of the event also provided quality performances and exciting competition.

Chad Miyamoto defends his title as Hawai'i's Fastest Human, winning the 100 in 10.95 seconds.

The meet was a fun and welcome reprieve before the pressure of the championship season begins. With its unique events, it was the perfect place to be for track fanatics.

The day started with a bang as Brashton Satele of Word of Life continued his dominance in the discus with another Herculean effort. The University of Hawai'i-bound football star, who earlier this season won the prestigious Stanford Invitational in California, only managed to throw it 174 feet, 2 inches yesterday, but won by 25 feet. His best mark this season is 190-3.

"The ring is rough and slow so it makes it tough to throw far," said Robin Santos, who coaches Satele. Satele also placed second in the shot put with a 50-7 1/2 heave.

In the middle of an intensely hot day, Jeremy Kamakaala of Kamehameha recorded some impressive splits on the two longest relays, opening huge gaps during his legs. In running the 1,200-meter first leg in the distance medley, he gave the Warriors a dominating lead they would never relinquish. Kamakaala then anchored the 4x800 team, closing a 30-meter gap and winning comfortably.

Of the 16 events, perhaps the most entertaining was the power relay in which nearly five tons of muscle rumbled once around the track. Almost all participants were football players. This special event required each relay member to weigh in at 200 pounds or more. It was won by Kahuku.

The glamour event was the Hawai'i's Fastest Human 100-meter dash. Those who saw the trials on Thursday were buzzing that there was going to be a new champion.

"Ryan Keomaka looks good and is UH's fastest football player," said past participant James Oshiro.

Spectators lined the length of the track and crowded the stands near the finish yesterday as Chad Miyamoto defended his title by edging Keomaka by 2/100th of a second in a time of 10.95. Four-time champ Kelsey Nakanelua placed third in 11.07.

Miyamoto put on a final surge in the final 10 meters to win, then extended his victory jog another 80 meters to the Mililani High School team, which he helps coach.

"I did not break 11 seconds when I won last year so I am happy," Miyamoto said.

Most spectators missed an excellent performance in the boys' high jump by Punahou senior Donovan Lim. His winning jump of 6 feet 6 was accomplished after the last running event was completed and most spectators and teams had left.

Chantel Franco of Pac-Five won the Mary A.P. May most outstanding award for the girls, after helping her team set the only meet record of the day in the 1,600 sprint medley. The Wolfpack won in 4:15.27 to eclipse the record by three seconds.

Franco also placed third in the long jump with a leap of 15-6 and anchored the Pac-Five 4x400 team to a second-place finish.

Spencer Hafoka of Kahuku won the Robert Paris most outstanding award for the boys after participating on three winning relay teams and placing fourth in the long jump.
