Kalaheo wins, gains tie for OIA East title

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

KAILUA — Kalaheo earned a tie for the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division championship last night with a 72-57 victory over Kaiser, and now a coin flip will decide the East's No. 1 seed for the upcoming league playoffs.

Kalaheo and Kahuku each finished the regular season with 11-1 records, and officially are East co-champions. Since the two teams defeated each other, a coin flip — probably tomorrow — will decide the No. 1 seed.

"It's too bad, because a coin flip has nothing to do with basketball," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "I wish they had the foresight to come up with some other way to decide it."

The Mustangs forced the issue last night with a strong performance from start to finish, even with a 40-minute delay in between caused by an injury to Kalaheo guard Shantel Marumoto and an incident between a fan and a referee (see story,).

The Mustangs ended the first period with an 8-0 run to lead 17-6, and never trailed by less than 10 thereafter.

After Kalaheo built a 20-point lead in the first half, the Cougars (8-4) made a run early in the third quarter to cut it to 44-31. That's when the delay occurred, but the Mustangs took it in stride and stretched the lead to 56-40 entering the fourth.

"I was concerned about the girls after (the delay)," Furtado said. "They looked a little teary-eyed, and they were worried about Shantel. But I told them we started strong and we need to finish up."

Even without the delay, the game dragged on as both teams were in the bonus and double-bonus situation early in both halves. Kaiser finished with 48 free-throw attempts, making 28.

Kalaheo shot 37 free throws, also making 28.

Furtado said he thought the game actually was officiated relatively well. But he added a no-call on Marumoto's layup leading to her injury may have caused a change in the game's tone and atmosphere.

"All it takes is one no-call for things to get out of hand," Furtado said. "I don't think the game was officiated poorly. But a single call can change the whole atmosphere."

Shanadee Canon led Kalaheo with 18 points and Taylor Smith added 14 points. Cougars guard Nicole Lehner led all scorers with 26 points.
