UCLA tops Hawai'i in MPSF water polo

Top-ranked UCLA overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat No. 4 Hawai'i, 10-5, yesterday in the semifinals of the Mountain Sports Federation Water Polo Championships at UC-Berkeley's Spieker Aquatic Complex.

Natalie Golda, Thalia Munro and Kelly Rulon each scored two goals for the Bruins (29-0), who surged to a 6-2 lead at the half and capped the victory by scoring the last three goals of the match.

Beth Novick scored two goals for the Rainbow Wahine (20-8), who play No. 2 USC today in the third-place game. Third-ranked Stanford beat the Trojans, 9-5, in yesterday's other semifinal.



TRACK AND FIELD

Young spurs UH

Sophomore Kelly Young anchored the University of Hawai'i women's track team to a third-place finish in one race and ran a stellar leg in another yesterday at the 96th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

Bianca DeBartolo, Jessica Rohr, Tasha Monroe and Young completed the 1,600-meter sprint medley in 3 minutes, 57.92 seconds to break the school record by 22 seconds.

Later in the day, Young ran the second leg in the 4x800 and brought the sellout crowd of 18,000 to its feet when she brought UH from 30 meters behind to the lead with a 2:05 split in which she caught All-American Lindsay Gallo of Michigan.

The Rainbow Wahine, with Dana Buchanan, Heather Scott and Sheen Thain joining Young, faltered to finish ninth in 9:02.42.

Elsewhere, junior Novelle Murray broke her own UH record in the hammer throw with a 188-foot, 5-inch effort at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif.

Murray, who surpassed the school mark by nearly 6 1/2 feet, finished third. She also threw the shot 41-9.25 and the discus 171-06.

In other noteworthy performances, sophomore pole vaulter Patricia Gauthier soared 12 feet, 5 1/2 inches to tie her lifetime best, and senior Lana Phillips threw the javelin 121 feet to surpass her lifetime best.



WRESTLING

Bradley falls short

Donell Bradley, a 1999 Radford High graduate from 'Aiea, lost in the third-place match of the 158-pound women's division at the U.S. National Wrestling Championships yesterday in Las Vegas.

Randi Miller of Texas posted a 1-0, 1-0 win over Bradley, who had lost in the semifinals.

Katie Kunimoto (Castle '99) was beaten in the third-place match of the 105-pound division by Hana Askren of Los Angeles.

Also, Danyelle Hedin (Kailua '04) pinned Clarissa Calibuso (Moanalua) in the seventh-place match of the 121-pound division.



TENNIS

Vulcans all-Pac West

University of Hawai'i-Hilo players Jeremy Moitry, Mai Fujii and Tiana Lum-Tucker have been named all-Pacific West Conference.

Moitry, ranked No. 49 in NCAA Division II singles, had a 16-3 record for the Vulcans' men's team. The junior from Villerupt, France, also had a 10-11 doubles record.

Fujii, a junior from Fukuoka City, Japan, is ranked No. 40 in singles. She had a 9-8 record and teamed with Lum-Tucker to compile a 12-4 doubles record for Hilo's women's team.

Lum-Tucker, a junior from Kapa'a, also won three additional doubles matches with other partners.
