Man pleads not guilty in former Hawai'i girl's murder

Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A convicted child molester pleaded not guilty today to charges that he kidnapped, molested and killed a 7-year-old former Hawai'i girl.

Curtis Dean Anderson, 44, appeared briefly in Santa Clara Superior Court for his arraignment. A judge ruled several weeks ago that the evidence against Anderson was strong enough to warrant that he be tried for the slaying of Xiana Fairchild of Vallejo.

Anderson will appear in court again June 8. Prosecutors said today that they still haven't decided whether to seek the death penalty.

Anderson is already is serving a life sentence for kidnapping another girl who escaped and helped lead police to him.

During an April preliminary hearing, a witness described how Anderson said he befriended Xiana with quarters and candy in the days before he abducted her.

He allegedly told witnesses that he finally lured Xiana to his car with a promise of a trip to Disneyland. Anderson described to a jail inmate how he repeatedly raped the girl, and that he kept her in his home until he decided to kill her, a witness said.

Xiana was raised by great-aunt, Stephanie Kahalekulu, in Hawai'i and Colorado before moving to Vallejo six months before her disappearance.

Her skull was found in the Santa Cruz mountains in January 2001. Investigators refused to release details on her cause of death or any physical evidence linking Anderson to the crime.
