Honoring young stewards of Kailua Bay

By Deborah Booker

As conch shells sounded, the Hokule'a anchored in Kailua Bay — a symbol of the students' pioneering work to save the ecosystem.

Halau Hula 'O Kawaili'ula performed at Kailua Beach yesterday to mark the arrival of the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokule'a at the first Malama Kailua Festival. The event marked the end of a yearlong project by 600 students at four schools, in which they learned and taught the community about issues affecting Kailua Bay and worked to improve the environment.

Kapilialoha MacKenzie gave Billy Richards of the Hokule'a a Polynesian greeting on Kailua Beach after the crew disembarked.
