UH pitcher Costi wins weekly WAC award

University of Hawai'i starter Justin Costi was named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after his performance Saturday night against Nevada.

Costi, a junior right-hander from Sacramento, Calif., threw eight innings of shutout ball in an 8-0 victory over the Wolf Pack.

He allowed six hits and two walks while striking out four in picking up his second win of the season.

It was Costi's first career WAC Pitcher of the Week award and the fourth for a Rainbow hurler this year.

San Jose State shortstop Anthony Contreras was honored as WAC Player of the Week. He batted 8 for 15 as the Spartans went 3-1 last week.



WATER POLO

UH women fourth at MPSF tournament

The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team finished fourth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship after losing to No. 2 USC, 12-6, yesterday at Berkeley, Calif.

Iefke Van Belkum scored five goals for the No. 4-ranked Rainbow Wahine, who dropped to 20-9. All-American Beth Novick scored Hawai'i's other goal.

The Trojans took third with the victory and improved to 23-4.

UCLA beat Stanford, 9-5, in the tournament final.

The Rainbow Wahine will wait today to find out if they're one of three at-large selections into the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championships. The announcement is scheduled for 2 p.m. (Hawai'i time).



GOLF

Hayashi leads by one stroke at Kapalua

Kevin Hayashi shot a three-under-par 67 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Verizon Hawai'i Hall of Fame Championship at Kapalua's Village Course on the Big Island.

John Lynch is second, and five golfers are at 70, including defending champion Ron Castillo Jr.

Gregg Baker leads the senior division by three strokes after shooting a 70.

Today's final round starts at 6:50 a.m.
