Police Beat: Hostage ordeal ends in arrest

Advertiser Staff

A Honolulu man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of attempted murder, kidnapping and other felony charges after he allegedly held four people captive in a downtown apartment building for more than 11 hours, beginning about 2 a.m.

Police said the 39-year-old man had gone to visit his estranged wife who was staying in an 18th-floor apartment at a N. Beretania St. tower.

The man was waiting at the apartment with his wife's roommate and two other acquaintances when she returned at about 2 a.m. They argued and the man beat his wife, police said.

They said her male roommate heard her cries for help and was attempting to call building security guards when the suspect saw him, became enraged and beat him, too, police said.

The suspect then doused the roommate with rubbing alcohol and ignited it, police said. He also stabbed the roommate three times with a large knife, police said.

Then the suspect tied up all four of the people in the apartment — two men, ages 65 and 54, and two women, ages 49 and 39 — and threatened to kill them, police said.

Sometime later, the suspect sexually assaulted one of the women, who is an acquaintance of his estranged wife, police said. After that, the suspect's wife talked him into letting her leave the apartment, police said, under the guise of having to buy sweets for one of the two men who is said to be diabetic.

Once outside the apartment, the estranged wife flagged down a passing police officer, who went back to the apartment with the woman, got into the unit and arrested the suspect about 3:45 p.m. on suspicion of four counts of kidnapping, two counts of attempted second-degree murder, four counts of first-degree sexual assault, four counts of first-degree terroristic threatening and one count each of second- and third-degree assault.

Police did not say what happened to the man who was allegedly burned and stabbed, or report the condition of the other victims.

The suspect, who has a lengthy criminal history, remained in the police cellblock this morning without charges.

Teen alleges assault by youth

A 13-year-old Kailua boy was arrested yesterday after a 13-year-old girl told police the boy had sexually assaulted her on Thursday.

The boy, who police said is an acquaintance of the girl, was arrested about 12:30 p.m. yesterday on suspicion of third-degree sexual assault.

Moped ride ends in arrest

A 16-year-old boy was arrested last night in connection with the theft of a moped earlier in the day from a 38-year-old Honolulu man.

A patrol officer reported seeing the boy commit several traffic violations while riding the moped and ordered the boy to pull over.

Instead, the boy jumped off the moped and ran, but was caught by the police officer a short time later.

After learning that the moped had been reported stolen, the officer arrested the boy on suspicion of unlawful control of a propelled vehicle.

Girl reports assault

A 35-year-old Nanakuli man was arrested yesterday in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a juvenile girl while she slept between 11p.m. on April 3 and 7 a.m. the following morning.

The suspect was booked for investigation of one count each of second- and third-degree sexual assault and four counts of fourth-degree sexual assault. He was released without charges pending further investigation.
