Hawaiian Telcom, formerly known as Verizon Hawaii, plans to hire 250 employees in the next several months to replace jobs that had been consolidated on the Mainland under Verizon.

Linda Frank, vice president of sales, spoke yesterday to employees of Hawaiian Telcom, formerly known as Verizon Hawaii. The company will eventually have a Hawai'i workforce of 1,850 people.

The positions will be in information technology, marketing, human resources and finance, said Hawaiian Telcom spokeswoman Ann Nishida.

When the hiring is completed, Hawaiian Telcom will have a Hawai'i work force of 1,850, Nishida said.

Following the $1.6 billion sale to Washington, D.C.-based The Carlyle Group, the company officially began operating as Hawaiian Telcom yesterday with Kahu Curt Kekuna of Kawaiahao Church blessing the new company sign featuring blue and green circles.

"In a symbolic way, the circles tell the story of this company," said Michael Ruley, Hawaiian Telcom's chief executive officer. "We're a company that has come full circle — back to being locally managed again. ... This company was founded more than 120 years ago to service Hawai'i's people and today we're returning to that original mission."
