Whether you're a rank beginner with two left feet or a seasoned salsa expert, Hot Salsa Hawaii offers a chance to dance against a Waikiki sunset and the starlight during Salsa Under the Stars, a benefit to help local dancers fund their performances in the West Coast Salsa Congress in Los Angeles.

Two stages (to separate the beginners and advanced dancers) will be set up at the Elks Lodge at 2933 Kalakaua Ave. The evening begins at 5 p.m. with lessons for beginners, followed by intermediate lessons. Dancing will continue until midnight.

Tickets are $20 advance or $23 at the door. Complimentary valet parking, refreshments and prizes will be provided. Tickets: Call Greg Henry at 256-7556. Information: www.hawaiisalsa.com.

'Hitchhiker' rides to No. 1 with $21.7 million

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" thumbed its way to the top of the box office as the space oddity debuted with $21.7 million.

Ice Cube's action tale "XXX: State of the Union" opened a weak third with $13.7 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. "XXX" came in behind last weekend's top movie, Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn's "The Interpreter," which slipped to No. 2 with $14.2 million, lifting its 10-day total to $43.6 million.

Adapted from the first of the late Douglas Adams' comically philosophical books about the universe, "Hitchhiker's Guide" follows the adventures of an ordinary Brit who catches a ride with aliens moments before Earth is destroyed to make way for an interstellar bypass.

"Talking about music is like talking about sex. Can you describe it? Are you supposed to?"
