Hayashi triumphs by 3 strokes at Kapalua

Mauna Kea Resort's Kevin Hayashi fired a 6-under-par 64 yesterday to win the Verizon Hawai'i Hall of Fame Championship by three strokes at Kapalua's Village Course.

Hayashi finished with a two-round total of 131. John Lynch (68-66) of Kuki'o Golf and Beach Club was second and Kapalua Golf Club's Jerry King was third with a 70-66—136.

Mike Iyoki won the senior division with a 145 total.



UH men ninth at WAC

The University of Hawai'i men's team is ninth after the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships yesterday at Choudrant, La.

Hawai'i posted a team score of 317 at the Squire Creek Golf Course. Tulsa leads with a 301.

UH junior Jarett Hamamoto shot an even-par 72 and is tied for second, one shot behind leader Sam Korbe of Tulsa.



Hilo men seventh

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's team is seventh after shooting a 34-over-par 322 yesterday in the first round of the NCAA Division II Northwest/West Super Regional at Dakota Dunes, S.D.

Cal State Stanislaus leads the eight-team West pool with a 312 total at cold and windy Dakota Dunes Country Club.

The Vulcans' top golfer is Nick Mason, who is tied for 13th with a 6-over-par 78.
