UH coed team earns national dinghy berth

The University of Hawai'i coed team finished in a tie for first at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association Dinghy Championships at Long Beach, Calif., this past weekend and qualified for the national meet.

By finishing in the top two, the coed team returns for the fifth straight year to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association's Dinghy National Championships, where it will defend its 2004 title.

UH tied USC at the top of the standings with a point total of 112 at Long Beach. The two teams were dominant over the weekend with the nearest competitor, third-place Stanford, finishing 38 points off the pace.

Sailing for Hawai'i were All-Americans Jennifer Warnock and Bryan Lake, who were tops in the A division with 47 points. Scott DeCurtis, Rebecca Mabardy, Matthew Stine, Cassandra Harris and Shandy Buckley sailed in the B division.

The ICSA Team Race National Championships will be held in Austin, Texas, June 5 to 7, with the Coed Dinghy National Championships held June 8 to 10. The coed team had earlier qualified for the Team Race Nationals by finishing second in the PCYRIA Championships on Friday.

Two-person canoe times corrected

The crew of J.P. Mihlbauer, Mark Shimmer, Tony Calderon and Nabil Vogele won the two-person canoe (OC-2) division of the Starbucks Kaiwi Channel Relay on Sunday.

Their winning time was 5 hours, 45 minutes, 56 seconds.

The times provided for that division that appeared in yesterday's Advertiser were incorrect.

Their winning time also made them the first crew to finish overall.
