• "Kingdom of Heaven": A historical epic from director Ridley Scott. Orlando Bloom stars as Balian, a French blacksmith who is encouraged by his father (Liam Neeson) to come to Jerusalem, where he becomes an aide to the Christian King Baldwin (Edward Norton) and later takes over command of the city. • "Palindromes": Another challenge from Todd Solondz, whose movies deal in moral ambiguity. "Palindromes" has characters in favor of abortion and characters opposed to it, and finds fault with all of them. Opens tomorrow at Dole Cannery 18 Theatres. (Not rated)
• "William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice": The first made-for-theaters feature in the sound era stars Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons. Opens tomorrow at Varsity Twin. (R)
