Police Beat: Teen arrested in sexual assault

Police yesterday arrested a 14-year-old Wahiawa boy as a suspect in the sexual assault of a 13-year-old Wahiawa girl.

The girl's mother told police she learned of the assault yesterday. Her daughter said it happened Tuesday about 7 p.m.

Police located the boy yesterday and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault, burglary and kidnapping. He was released without charges pending further investigation.



Bicyclist in critical condition

A 24-year-old Waimanalo woman was in critical condition yesterday at The Queen's Medical Center after being hit by a car about 6:55 a.m. while riding her bike in Lanikai.

Police said the woman was riding a 2004 sports bicycle downhill on Alala Road when a 1999 Toyota Tercel driven by a 49-year-old Kailua resident traveling in the opposite direction made a left turn at Kaneapu Place and hit the cyclist.

The injured woman was taken to Castle Medical Center in serious condition with head and shoulder injuries but was later transferred to The Queen's Medical Center after her condition worsened to critical.

Traffic investigators said the woman was wearing a helmet when she was struck.



Moped crash leaves passenger injured

A 21-year-old University of Hawaii student who was a moped passenger was critically injured early yesterday morning when the 20-year-old man operating the moped lost control while traveling through a hairpin turn near the 8.5 mile marker on Round Top Drive.

Police said the moped operator hit a curb, hurling the woman off the back at about 2:45 a.m.

The passenger was taken to Queen's with head injuries.

State law prohibits passengers on mopeds.
