BUSINESS BRIEFS
Airline will sell division soon

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Aloha Airlines is close to selling its contract-service businesses in a move that would reduce the carrier's workforce by nearly 1,000 employees, a company official said.

The contract-service division offers a range of services to other airlines, such as ground handling and aircraft maintenance.

Aloha last fall first broached the possibility of selling the contract-service division, as well as the company's cargo unit. Aloha filed for bankruptcy on Dec. 30, 2004.

Wednesday in federal bankruptcy court, Aloha attorney Paul Singerman said the airline would press ahead with the sale of only the contract-service division.

The airline is considering several bids and hopes to make a final decision by June 1.

Verizon extends DSL deadline

Verizon Communications has extended the deadline for Hawai'i DSL customers to sign up for six-months of free MSN Premium services to May 15.

Those who do not sign up will lose the service on May 31, instead of May 15. Verizon was the previous owner of Hawaiian Telcom, the new name for Hawai'i's major phone company.

Once the six-month free trial is over customers will have to pay regular monthly charges of $9.95 for the firewall and anti-virus service.

Senior award nominees sought

The Hawai'i chapter of Experience Works, a national nonprofit organization that helps low-income senior citizens get job training, is seeking nominations of older workers for its Prime Time Awards Program.

The award recognizes and honors the contributions of older workers to their communities and workplaces.

Applicants must be at least 65 years old, reside in Hawai'i, and work at least 20 hours a week. The deadline for nominations is May 31. The honoree must be willing and able to travel to Washington, D.C., the week of Sept. 26 for the award presentation.
