Hilton hosts Village Arts

The Honolulu Jazz Quartet — from left, John Kolivas, Dan Del Negro, Adam Baron and Tim Tsukiyama — will perform Sunday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's arts celebration.

Celebrate the arts in Waikiki as the Hilton Hawaiian Village hosts a Village Arts Celebration this weekend as part of the 2005 Hawaii Arts Season.

Tonight, the Hilton hosts its weekly Aloha Friday King's Jubilee show and fireworks, with the king's procession at 7 p.m., followed by Hawaiian and Pacific song and dance before the fireworks at 8 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday, the Tapa Bar features entertainment. On Saturday, the performers are Slim Junior (11 a.m.), Skin Strung (12:30 p.m.), Honolulu Brass (2 p.m.), Willow Chang (3:30 p.m.) and The Wee Thrashers (5 p.m.). On Sunday, the entertainment comes from Doolin' Rakes (11 a.m.), Partners in Time (12:30 p.m.), Makana (2 p.m.), the Galliard String Quartet (3:30 p.m.) and the Honolulu Jazz Quartet (5 p.m.).

Also on Saturday and Sunday, East meets West in such Rainbow Bazaar area entertainment as jugglers, a clown, a face painter, a watercolor artist, a sakahachi flute and koto duo, Kevin Chang, Kelli Heath and an anching and erhu duo.

Te Vaka at Leeward Community College

Artistry on wheels

The public is invited to watch local amateur skateboarders compete for a chance to appear on MTV's "TRL" and a grand prize of a 50-inch Sony Wega plasma high-definition TV. The event is called The Lords of Dogtown Skatepark Jam and is being held in 34 cities in the

United States in conjunction with the film "The Lords of Dogtown," above, scheduled to open June 3. Original Z-Boyz Jay Adams, Jim Muir and Shogo Kubo will judge the competition; graffiti artists and DJ/pro skateboarder Jef Hartsel also will perform.

A 'Balance' of contemporary moves

The Kamehameha Dance Company gets on its feet to help Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii with a concert titled "Balance." This hourlong contemporary dance showcase features modern and lyrical jazz routines and modern ballet by dancers from grades 7 to 12. Part of the proceeds benefits Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii.

An ocean of concern

Ride a wave of fun at E Malama I Ke Kai (Care for the Ocean), a daylong concert and ocean awareness festival. This edu-taining celebration hopes to increase public knowledge about protecting and preserving the ocean environment, with exhibits and activities. Those performing at the concert include Kaumaka'iwa "Lopaka" Kanaka'ole, Ho'okena, 'Ale'a, Kupa'aina, Kalaeloa, Sudden Rush and Sean Na'auao. There will be an inflatable funhouse, keiki rides and games, too. The event benefits the Hawaiian-language immersion program Punana Leo o Kawaiaha'o.

First Friday turns 2

Shop, browse, celebrate and more at the monthly First Friday art gallery walk, which is celebrating its second birthday tonight. More than 20 venues open their doors after hours for this art stroll:

  • Louis Pohl Gallery showcases "Landscape Statement — Lay of the Land," with new works by Gallyn, Tamara Moan and Marcia Pasqua.
  • thirtyninehotel hosts a performance by Mi-So-Ra and an opening reception for works of P-factory and Friends by artists from Tokyo, Berlin, San Francisco, New York, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Seattle and Honolulu.
  • Bethel Street Gallery is holding over "Moments of Reflection" by Mark Kadota through May 10.
  • The Hawai'i State Art Museum celebrates Cinco de Mayo with traditional mariachi music by Mariachi Pacifico.
  • Lynn Matsuoka displays works from her Kabuki and Hula Collection, at Tea at 1024.
  • J Salon features mixed-media works of printer/painter Kyle Usui.

Dogs, cats and other pals

Celebrate National Pet Week and Be Kind to Animals Week at the Hawaii Pet Expo. Presented by the Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association, this year's theme is "Best of Friends — Best of Health." On Saturday, see the All Breed Parade of Cats at 11:30 a.m. and the All Breed Parade of Dogs at 1:30 p.m. On Sunday, there's the household cat show at 11:30 a.m., Hawaiian Kennel Club Puppy Match at noon and a petting zoo. Both days feature the Ask-A-Vet booth, educational displays, animal demonstrations, pet products and services and crafters. People and pets are welcome at this two-day affair, but dogs must be leashed and owners must control their pets at all times. Non-perishable food items for the Hawaii Foodbank are also welcome.
