Three named Presidential Scholars

Advertiser Staff

For the second year in a row, a Punahou School senior has been named one of 20 Presidential Scholars in the Arts.

Julia Ogilvie, who was one of the three top finalists in the 2004 National Shakespeare Festival in New York, will be honored along with academic honorees at a White House ceremony next month.

Each winner will receive a Presidential Scholars medallion. Ogilvie will also take part in a Kennedy Center performance with the other arts winners.

Hawai'i's academic Presidential Scholars are Kimberly Reinhold, of St. Joseph's High School in Hilo, and Christian Ling, of Maui High School. Reinhold is a four-time state science fair winner; Ling was a member of Maui's first Science Bowl team to capture the state championship.

The scholars' most influential teachers will also be honored. Ogilvie picked Paul Palmore, Reinhold chose David DeCleene and Ling selected Edwin Ginoza.

The 14-year-old Presidential Scholars program honors one male and one female student from each state, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. families living abroad. Honors also go to 15 at-large and 20 arts scholars. Students are chosen for academic or arts accomplishments, leadership, character and civic contributions.

They and their teachers will take part in a four-day celebration in Washington including educational seminars, meetings with representatives of the three branches of government, a morning of community service, an exhibition of scholar artwork and a performance by the arts winners.
