Hawai'i gymnasts move on to nationals

Three Hawai'i gymnasts won all-around titles in the Region 2 Gymnastics Championships in Whitefish, Mont., last month.
Region 2 consists of gymnasts from Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, and Hawai'i.
In Level 10, the level below elite, Tracie Tamashiro swept all four events and the all-around title in the age 15 division. Her all-around score was 38.475.
Randi Lau took three of four events and the all-around title in the age 10-12 division.
Both athletes from Hawaiian Island Twisters advance to the nationals in Ontario, Calif., May 14 and 15.
They will be joined by Mawie Talion, Megan Harada, Kara Mun, Madison Cole and Dominique Cooper, from the Hawaiian Island Twisters; Naomi DeLara from Maui Gymnastics; Brianne Nakamura of Rainbow Gymnastics; and Jackie Walkabout from Pantheon Gymnastics in Hilo.
Talion took second and DeLara third.
Cole, Cooper, Nakamura and Walkabout are listed as alternates.
In Level 9, Rika Rossing won two of four events and the all-around title in the 15-16 age division.
Amanda Pascual shared first for the all-around title in the 12-13 division.
They advance to the Level 9 Western Nationals tomorrow and Sunday in St. Louis, along with Tamara Rapp, Emiko Ono, Marsa Inoue, Mandilyn Suzuki, and Mackenzie Sato, of Hawaiian Island Twisters. Also advancing was Courtney Fukuda and Alyssa Kojima of Kokokahi Gymnastics.
In Level 8 championships, Tiara Rapp took second and Jenna Frowein eighth in all-around. Both are from Hawaiian Island Twisters.
A select Hawai'i team finished third in the region behind Oregon and Washington in Level 8.
The six, chosen regardless of age, earned a spot on the team by compiling the highest all-around scores in the state's Level 8 meets.
The team members are Jasmine Padeken-Pasigen, Andrea Prohaska, Jenna Frowein and Tiara Rapp, all of Hawaiian Island Twisters; Sarah Guerrero of Maui Gymnastics and Kelly Nakashima of Rainbow Gymnastics Academy of O'ahu.
Tiara Rapp, 10, who is home-schooled, earned two perfect 10s on her floor and uneven bar routines.
Leohu Burnett of Maui Gymnastics and Taylor Moss of Rainbow Gymnastics are alternates.

The Mililani High School Trojan junior varsity cheer squad won first place in the NCA/NDA U.S. championships at Knott's Berry Farm at Anaheim, Calif., in March.
The Trojans had no deductions in their routine in beating Ramona High of California.
Mililani competed in a field of seven squads between the ninth and 11th grades and not more than 22 members. Mililani had a nine-girl squad consisting of eight freshmen and a sophomore.
Kaua'i High School Varsity and Damien Memorial High School Varsity squads also won their respective divisions.
