Six basketball players, including two Division I transfers, have signed to play for Hawai'i Pacific next season, coach JD Barnett announced yesterday.

HPU, a Division II team, finished 10-16 overall and 4-11 in the Pacific West Conference last season.

The new recruits are:

• Borko Popic, 6-5 forward from Kitchener, Ontario, who played his freshman season at Division I Virginia Military Institute this year.

• Kevin Schneider, 6-2 point guard from Phoenix, who played last season at Division I Longwood (Farmville, Va.).

• Brandon Lee, 6-4 guard-forward from Gary, Ind., an All-Bay Valley Conference selection at Los Medanos (Pittsburg, Calif.) Community College.

• Adam Reinking, 6-4 guard-forward from Austin, Texas, who was a first-team All-Pacific Coast Conference player at San Diego Mesa Community College.

• Adam Snyder, 6-6 forward from Rocklin, Calif., a transfer from Yuba Community College of Marysville, Calif.

• Kevin Smith, 6-6 forward from Alexandria, Ky., a Blue-Chip Slam Dunk Champion, who averaged 10 points and five rebounds per game at Bishop Brossart High School.

Elsewhere, Travis Sobers, a 6-2 point guard from Barstow (Calif.) Community College has signed with the University of Hawai'i-Hilo.

Sobers, a junior, averaged 7.7 points and 2.2 rebounds per game at Barstow. He also had 66 assists and 41 steals in 25 games.

"We have a certain number of guys that can get the ball up and put the ball in," UHH coach Jeff Law said. "His main duty will be to get the ball from point A to point B."

SURFING

Kaua'i surfers advance

Kaua'i surfers Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly advanced to the quarterfinals of the Billabong Girls Pro yesterday at Teahupoo, Tahiti.

The first three rounds of the contest were completed yesterday in 4- to 5-foot waves.

Kennelly won her third round heat despite surfing with seven staples in her head after a wipeout on the reef in the second round. Her two-wave score of 15.67 in the third round was the best overall score of the day.

Ballard had a near-perfect score of 9.5 in her third round victory over Australian Claire Bevilacqua.

Waialua's Megan Abubo, who was ranked No. 2 in the world rankings prior to yesterday, was eliminated in the third round.

The men's contest did not run yesterday.
