Fatality identified in moped crash

KEALAKEHE, Hawai'i — Big Island police yesterday identified a Kona man killed in a moped crash Sunday as Andrew Powers, 41, of Holualoa.

Police said Powers was riding his moped east on the Honokohau Boat Ramp Road when he lost control, fell over and hit his head on the pavement.



Bicycle rider injured in crash

A 24-year-old Waimanalo woman was in critical condition Thursday at The Queen's Medical Center after being hit by a car about 6:55 a.m. while riding her bike in Lanikai.

Police said the woman was riding a 2004 sports bicycle downhill on Alala Road when a 1999 Toyota Tercel driven by a 49-year-old Kailua resident traveling in the opposite direction made a left turn at Kaneapu Place and hit the cyclist.

The injured woman was taken to Castle Medical Center in serious condition but was later transferred to The Queen's Medical Center after her condition worsened to critical.

An update on her condition was not available yesterday.



Moped passenger injured critically

A 21-year-old University of Hawai'i student who was a mo-ped passenger was injured critically Thursday morning when the 20-year-old man operating the moped lost control on Round Top Drive.

Police said the moped operator hit a curb, hurling the woman off the back at about 2:45 a.m.

The passenger was taken to Queen's with head injuries. An update on her condition was not available yesterday.

State law prohibits passengers on mopeds.
