Manoa grads get new look this year

Advertiser Staff

Thousands of students throughout the University of Hawai'i system will receive diplomas in commencement exercises beginning Thursday.

Manoa's commencement ceremonies will feature several new additions, from green caps and gowns to new academic regalia for the chancellor based on Hawai'i themes including the kukui nut and leaves, which have traditionally symbolized "the light of knowledge."

Graduates will march to new music, a processional titled "Above All Nations" composed by UH-Manoa music professor Don Womack at the request of chancellor Peter Englert.

The music, whose title is taken from the university motto "Above all nations is humanity," incorporates elements distinct to Hawai'i, UH and Manoa, with themes drawn from "Hawai'i Pono'i" and the theme "In Green Manoa Valley."

Womack said he hopes it "captures both the joy and the solemnity of the occasion."
