3-peat for Punahou girls, Warrior boys

By Leila Wai
Advertiser Staff Writer

Unlike the inches and seconds that determined winners yesterday, the Kamehameha boys and Punahou girls had comfortable cushions as each captured their third straight team titles at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu track and field championships at Kamehameha.

Pac-Five junior Lauren Ho won girls the 800 meters, 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters.

The Kamehameha boys remain undefeated in their Kunuiakea Stadium, winning by 70 points, amassing 180, ahead of Punahou with 110 and Damien's 52.

"Last year we had stars," Kamehameha coach Sam Moku said. "This year, they bought into the system. I was very surprised with how well they did with this bunch of boys."

Punahou won the girls title with 186.67 points, followed by Pac-Five with 106, and Iolani with 92.33.

"We have big numbers," Punahou coach Duncan Macdonald said. "We have a lot of youth, but not a lot of depth. The events we're deep in, we're real deep. If you want to win the team event, you have to have points come from different places."

The Kamehameha boys team was led by individual champions Joshua Guth in the 400-meter dash (52.25), Jeremy Kamaka'ala in the 3,000-meter run (9:24.52), Anthony Taylor in the long jump (22-6 3/4), and Kepa Gaison in the shot put (52-7 1/2).

Punahou's Donovan Lim won the boys high jump for the second straight year, clearing 6-4.

Kamehameha also won both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays, and only didn't score points in one out of 16 events.

"Everything else, we were in second, third, fourth place," Moku said. "We just kind of stepped it up."

The Punahou girls did the same, with wins by Kim Culver in the 100 (13.01) and 200 (26.63), Talitha Liu in the 100 hurdles (16.34), Alexa Untermann in the high jump (4-10), a record-setting Anna Hildebrand in the pole vault (10-6), and Samantha Cabreros in the triple jump (35-6).

They also won both 4x100 and 4x400 relays, and failed to score points in only two of 16 events.

Culver, a sophomore, moved up from junior varsity after winning the 100 and 400 in the ILH JV championships.

"Our coach just wanted us to do our best," said Culver, who was a part of Punahou's winning relay teams. "He didn't want to put the pressure on us. But we all knew we wanted to win."

Pac-Five junior Lauren Ho, of Hawai'i Baptist, won three events, the 800-meter run (2:18.76), the 1,500-meter run (4:47.99) and the 3,000-meter run (10:37.88). She also ran the anchor leg in Pac-Five's second-place 4x400 relay.

"That, I had never done before," said Ho, of running in those four events in one meet. "After the (800), I was pretty tired. So we thought I should take it easy (in the 3,000)."

Two meet records were broken yesterday.

Punahou's Hildebrand pole vaulted 10-6, breaking her own meet record of 10-3 set last year.

Word of Life junior Careena Onosai three-peated in both the discus and shot put (30-3 3/4). She tossed the discus 137-4 to break the record set by Iolani's Genia Linear (133-4) in 2001.

"I was striving for 140, but the main thing, for my dad (Joe) and I, was just to get past the record," Onosai said. "Today, it was a lot of pressure, I didn't have a good warmup, and I had to defend my titles."

After the trials, Onosai was seeded first with a throw of 125-3. But Iolani's Megan Burton was close at 122-7.

"That's the closest anyone has been to me in a long time, it was scary," Onosai said.

Several athletes won two events.

Damien's Manuel Benitez won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.51 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 41.50.

Ho'ala senior Mykah Norville won the 800 (2:01.77) and 1,500 (4:09.28), and single-handedly led the team to a tie for fifth place with 28 points.

"A lot of people didn't know who we were," said Norville, who was a one-person team last year. He added that Ho'ala is 1/4in the pineapple fields of Wahiawa," with 40 students in the high school.

"Today was about my team, I wanted to show them what you could do if you dedicate yourself to running," said Norville, who won the school's first ILH track title last year in the 3,000.

Pac-Five senior Chantel Franco, of St. Andrew's Priory, won the long jump (16-6.75) and 400 (59.60).

"I actually feel like all those times at practice that I barfed, it means something," said Franco, who repeated as the 400 champ.

She was part of a Pac-Five contingency that won six individual events, helping the Wolfpack to a strong second-place finish.

"We all work really hard together," Franco said. "We have a lot of fun. It's a chance to show how hard we work."
